Gym Dedication
Friday, February 8, 2008

Rockville High School will be naming its Gym in honor of Coach Jim Conner at the last double varsity game of the 2008 season. Coach Conner was Rockville's first basketball coach and was a talented and well respected coach. The 1st senior class of 1971 won a state Championship. His team won a 2nd State Championship in 1973. Coach Conner's teams participated in four State championships winning two and losing two in the semi-finals one in double overtime.

This dedication will take place on Friday February 8th at Rockville between the Varsity Girls and Boys game that night vs. WatkinsMill. The girls game starts at 5:15pm.

A reception will take place after the game in the cafeteria. There are many of you in the community who knew Coach Conner as well as many coaches and AD's. Please help us in
spreading the word about this night and hope to see some of you here.

Any questions please contact RHS AD Paul Fahrner at the school.

Please come early and hungry and cheer our Rams on to a victory.

Reports from many of our Coaches have been provided at our request.
There is still time to catch most of these teams in action before the season and playoffs end:

============================================
VOLLEYBALL- Ladies

Girl's varsity volleyball is 5-6 with 3 tough matches remaining. I am hoping that we will finish with a winning record, but our team is not very tall so we must be awesome passing to beat the teams with bigger players. 2 of the varsity seniors, Heidi Yoon and Sarah Kim, were
recognized by the Rockville Rotary as outstanding student athletes.

We are hoping to make playoffs.

Please let me know if there is something more you wanted to know.
Cindy Hollies, Coach

============================================
SOCCER - Men

The boys soccer team played a very good and attractive soccer all year long. This is a new team due to the many graduating seniors from last year. This year team is made up of freshman and few seniors. The games were spirited and fun. Even though we had a lot of injuries in key positions and we lost those players for the entire season, the team was
unified and upbeat.

The future looks good to go back to be on the top of the division as we always have been for the past seven years.

Go Rams!
Coach Abdel
Boys varsity soccer

============================================
SOCCER - Ladies

Just wanted to send a note about the girls soccer team...

We won the division this year...our divisional record was 4-0-1 and we currently have an overall record of 7-1-2... We lost our first game of the year then had a 9 game unbeaten streak and have recorded 7 shutouts...

The girls play on the field earned them a #3 seed in the Regional Tournament and at least one home playoff game.

Thanks, Mike

================================================
CROSS COUNTRY

The girls were 4-1 the boys were 0-5 in divisional meet competition.

The girls team:
Elizabeth Fisher, Celina Gutierrez, Abbey Austin, Emma Hankins, Margaret Gratian

The boys team:
William Orndorff, Ian Kirk, Forrest Osgood, Jonathan Cothran, Brian Cadigan, Matthew Osgood, Kevin Donnelly

Seniors William Orndorff, Elizabeth Fisher, and Celina Gutierrez -- all had an outstanding season.

William placed first in every divisional meet except for one -- he was sick that day. Elizabeth and Celina came in first, second or third in each of the girls divisional races. All the results are posted on the cross country page on the Rockville website.

We still have the county meet on Saturday and the Regional meet on November 1 which qualifies runners for the state meet held on November 10. Last year, William Orndorff qualified for the state meet and placed 20th in division 2A. I expect him to go to the state meet again this year.

Karl Kraus
Rockville Cross Country Coach

========================================================
GOLF

As a result of last years great season, the Rams golf team was bumped up 2 divisions this season, competing in the counties top division. With a group of young golfers, the Rams scratched out 2 victories.

The Rams Kaitlyn Blair qualified for the state tournament that will be held on October 23rd.

Way to go Rams and Good Luck Kaitlyn.
-Coach Riggs

Outback Bowl, Friday October 26th

The 10th annual Outback Bowl will take place at the RHS Homecoming Game. Come hungry and get a great meal and support the school!

The Booster Budget passed at Sept. 5th meeting. (Booster Budget). Now it’s time to have a little fun and raise the money!

We need volunteers to staff the snack bar, help sell Spirit Wear all season and to help serve food for the Outback Bowl. Contact Donna Nichols if you can help with the Outback Bowl (donna-nichols@comcast.net) It only takes a few hours to make a big difference for the school!

Contact either our Volunteer Coordinator Pam Angelis (pangelis@comcast.net) or our Snack Bar Coordinator Lennie Melvin (lenmelvin@verizon.net) to sign up for Snack Bar today! Get to know your neighbors and Rockville High School Community members and raise money while doing it! Such a deal!

If you would like to help with Spirit Wear, contact Susan Weinstein (split3ways@verizon.net) to volunteer.

If you are in Safeway and have some spare change, drop a few coins in the Booster Club Jugs to help settle our Stadium Lights obligation to the county – thanks to Nancy Fox for coordinating this effort!

Every team has a parent rep; if you don’t know who is your parent team rep, contact John Vlahakis, (john.vlahakis@lmco.com), our Parent Rep. Coordinator and he can give you the proper person to contact.

We’re off to a great start, hope to see you around the school and since “many hands make light work”, hope to see you helping with the Booster Club FUNdraisers this year.

In addition to the Athletic Department support noted previously and listed below, the Booster Club has continued to support other Extracurricular Activities at RHS. In 2007 beneficiaries of our fundraising efforts included:
  • Wrist bands for Every 15 Minutes
  • Mics for TV Production
  • Digital camera for Rampage
  • Bulbs for LCD projectors - available for use by all organizations
  • Equipment for It's Academic
  • ....with more funds still to be distributed

From outgoing president Doug Moritz:

BOOSTER CLUB DONATIONS HIT NEW HIGH FOR ROCKVILLE

On the final day that the full staff was gathered at Rockville High for 2007, Booster Club President Doug Moritz presented more donations to Rockville's Principal Dr. Debra Munk. For the year, the Booster Club donated over $50,000 to the school's school-based organizations, athletic teams and other parent organizations. Since the school year doesn't officially end until June 30th when the exact amounts will be final, the Booster Club raised over $100,000 this year from its fundraising at sports events, its annual Mulch Sale, sale of spirit wear and snacks at Rockville as well as Wood Middle School, donations from businesses in the community, and Rockville community events held at Rockville High this past school year.

"We turned over more money this year than ever before. The increase has so much to do with the enthusiasm at the school which is a direct result of everyone's efforts to make Rockville a place where students, parents and now the community want to be," Moritz said while at the school on Friday, June 15th. "The enthusiasm is infectious. It takes the entire Rockville community for that to happen, including Principal Munk and her team of administrators, teachers and coaches," he added. "Most importantly though, we had so many more parents step up this year to help with clubs, teams, and school events. I am proud of the effort of every one of the parents who found the time out of concern for the students, and often without the recognition they deserve."

A brief breakdown of the donations this year included an increase in funding for school-based organizations (up 100% form 2006) and the Athletic Department (up 89% from last year):

  • School Based Organizations $8,900
  • Scholarship, Staff appreciation, School publications and Rededication $2,100
  • Athletic Department (all teams and programs) $37,100
  • After Prom (parent-sponsored) $3,000
  • Stadium lights $2,200

Interested parents and others can follow the Booster Club on its web site, where the Club posts its minutes and financial reports each month: http://www.rhsboosterclub.org. There's also information on events and the items you can purchase from the RHS Booster Club on their site. You can access the site directly or link through the Rockville High School home page: http://www.mcps.k12.md.us/schools/rockvillehs/

If you have questions or comments, you can write to the RHS BOOSTERS at their mail box: RHS_BoosterClub@Yahoo.com. They meet each month at the high school. All RHS parents are invited.

AND FROM Athletic Director Paul Fahrner:
I just want to express my utmost gratitude from the Athletic department for the generous contribution from the booster club. As Doug mentioned it was the combined effort of parents, students and community. These funds will help our teams to have the best playing fields and equipment for our teams to be competitive. With the addition of JV Lacrosse next year we will have 36 Varsity and JV teams competing in inter-scholastic sports next year. Needles to say it takes a lot of money to fund these activities. The County provides some funds to help finance athletics but to purchase some big budget items additional resources are needed. Thanks to the efforts of our hard working booster club (the best in Montgomery county !!!) we have those additional funds. I would like to provide a list of things we have purchased over the past three years and will purchase this year thanks to the efforts of the booster club.

  • scorers table and chairs for the main gym
  • sound systems for the stadium field and main gym
  • championship banners in the main gym
  • irrigation system for the baseball and softball fields
  • scoreboards for baseball and softball
  • tractor to cut the fields
  • new starting system for the swim team
  • pitching machine for softball
  • temporary fences for softball and baseball
  • new wrestling mats
  • new cheerleading stunt mats
  • laptop computer for swim team
  • sideline tarps for football to protect the field for soccer and field hockey
  • tarps for pitching mound and home plate
  • new lacrosse equipment for JV girls and boys teams
  • Shoot-A - Way for girls and boys Basketball
  • some additional hurdles for the track teams
  • additional outdoor storage containers
  • the cost to maintain our athletic fields (the county does the bare minimum)
  • whatever comes up during the year that needs to be replaced, there is always something

The funds are used to support the entire athletic program here at Rockville. I think that in the community there is a feeling that most of the funds go to football. As you can see that is not true. Once again Thank from the Rockville Athletic department.
